Speed up Mozilla Firefox about 3-30x Faster!!!
Speed up Mozilla Firefox about 3-30x Faster!!!

## If you are using firefox like me then you should try this.

[BLACK]1. Type "about:config" into the address bar and hit return. Scroll
down and look for the following entries:

network.http.pipelining
network.http.proxy.pipelining
network.http.pipelining.maxrequests

Normally the browser will make one request to a web page at a time.
When you enable pipelining it will make several at once, which really
speeds up page loading.

2. Alter the entries as follows:

Set "network.http.pipelining" to "true"

Set "network.http.proxy.pipelining" to "true"

Set "network.http.pipelining.maxrequests" to some number like 30. This
means it will make 30 requests at once.

3. Lastly right-click anywhere and select New-> Integer.
Name it "nglayout.initialpaint.delay" and set its value to "0".
This value is the amount of time the browser waits before it acts on information it receives.

4.After altering the entries given above close the firefox window and restart.
If you're using a broadband connection you'll load pages 2-30 times faster now.
5.Feel The Difference in Speed

Enjoy...

Samsung Mobile Hack Codes

Tips and Tricks for the D820, D900, and other Samsung phones with similar firmware.

#*22671* - Starts the phone recording in the background. It can record up to an hour, secretly. Press #*22672*

Holding the volume button when the screen is off displays a short summary of information. Time, Date, signal, missed calls, etc...

Enter code *#1234# to display Firmware version of the phone
Example : D900XAFG6
D900 = model
XA = Region / Country
F = Year (2006)
G = Month (July)
6 = Firmware Release in month (so this is the 6th revision)

Hold down # to mute, or unmute the phone.

Press 1 while watching a video to make it full screen.

While playing a song in music player u can highlight a part of the song to be repeated over, while listening to the song press 7 at the point u want repeated then press 7 again at the end of the section and it will loop the section between the the two presses of 7

If you need to send a photo via mms and its too big to send and u have no pc available to downsize the pic (my limit is 100kb via mms with my sim) open the photo in photo editor on the phone and "save as" rename it differently from the original and u will have two copys of the pic and the edited version will be under 100kb.

Hidden Menu: *#8999*8378#

Make MP3 sound louder:
1. hit: *#8999*8378#
2. hit: 2, and then 2 again.
3. then on IIS NORMAL (or hit 9)
4. then on "Rx vol."
5. for level 10, click 0
then save

Orignals are:
level 10 = 10
level 9 = 18

Make sound setting louder when som1s calling:
1. *#8999*8378#
2. 2 times 2
3. 1 (NORMAL)
4. then on "Rx vol."
5. level 5 type 140 instead of 120

SAMSUNG A800 SECRET CODES

The universal unlock code is *2767*637# do this with out your sim in
By default, the firmware (software) for x600 only receives java
apps and other applications like stuff by serial port.
but even for it, you have to enable the serial port, which also
causes
the closing of all other ports, even the IrDA too :-( ..
well, guess what, i have very good news for you,
do you know, you can increase the sound level,
the sound level for tones, speaker fone, etc,
can be increase even then if it is at max (level 4)
you still can do it,
just follows the instructions!

**************** HERE WE GO **************
Enter the following code:
*#8999*8378#
(You'll be shown menu, then ...)
then go to:
"H/W test"
then go to:
"Audio Settings"

then go to:
"Melody Gain"

There will you see a number.
there are five (5) Melody Levels" of it.
(and currently, you are at level 1 and after
pressing the "save" button, you will move to
level 2 and so on .........................)
you have to change the values of all the levels.
and as the resultant, it will give increase the
melody sound!, your tones will more louder,
even more louder then the max. ringing volume.
the level wise numbers are: (as its my setting :-) )

Melody Level 1: 13
Melody Level 2: 17
Melody Level 3: 18
Melody Level 4: 25
Melody Level 5: 31
you even can make your own combinations of level wise
sounding numbers that can change the sound level!.

if your combination cause more louder sound level,
then mine,
then do share it with the group! ... :-)
meanwhile, try my figured-out combination!

************ CAUTION ************
if anything goes wrong,
then you can apply the master reset code,
that will NOT delete anything, ANYTHING from your
cell fone, but set each and eveything to its
default/standard setting ...
(likes, factory settings :-) )
the master reset code is:
#*7728#

#########################################
I take no responsibility of these codes are working or not,
or its effects on your cell fone
but i have tried these codes on my cell fone.
and i bet, nothing goes wrong,
but even then of my words, be carefull!,
#########################################
The code: *#8999*8378#
as i regarded it a informative code,
will tell you each and everything about your cell fone.
and in the "H/W test",
there are lot of other Audio settings,
each of them having five (5) levels,
you can change the combination, but before doing anything,
do write the defult number sequence to some place so that
you'll be then able to invert it again! .. :-) ...

Nokia 5110
_____________

IMEI Number *#06#
For checking the IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity).
---------------------------------------------------------
Security Code 12345
Default security code is 12345. If you forgot your security code, there s so many program on the net which allowed you to know the security code likes Security ID Generator, Nokia IMEI Changer, etc.

update:
Security ID Generator (SID.EXE) and IMEI Generator (NOKIAIMEI.EXE) doesn t works with Nokia 5110
Resetting Security Code

If you accidentally lock the phone or forgot the security code, the best thing to do is check it with your local Nokia dealer. For advanced user, you can use WinTesla, PCLocals or LogoManager program to read the security code or resetting the code (You will need an FBUS/MBUS (or compatible) cable to do this.
---------------------------------------------------------
Software Version *#0000#
For checking the phones software (SW) - called firmware revision information.
e.q : Version V. 4.51 (26-03-98) will display
V 04.51
26-03-98
NSE-1

first line:
The Software Version (my guess is that this software has been used in previously Nokia-phones, what do you say?!).

second line:
The Date of the SW release.

third line:
NHE-8 has something to do with the type of phone you are dealing with. Is it GSM 900 (standard), GSM 1800 (DCS1800) or GSM 1900 (PCS1900)?
Nokia 2110, 3110, 8110(i) are all NHE types. The only thing that vary is the code after NHE- ("8").
NHE = GSM 900, NHK =GSM 1800 - The number in the end = the model (2110i = 4 etc.)
The 5110 and 6110 is called NSE-1 and NSE-3...this may be because it supports EFR (?)

update:
Newest Software Version was V5.22 (xx-xx-99)
V 05.22
01-07-99
NSE-1

If your software version is V4.00, upgrade your software version to latest version. V4.00 contains bugs that sometimes will show message,
"SIM Card Not Ready" even the card is already inside the phone.
---------------------------------------------------------

Software Update
The only thing to do (for you and me) is for us to go to the nearest Nokia dealer and make him do it for you. Just remember that it is supposed to be free (a receipt is required) so don t let him tell you anything else!
---------------------------------------------------------

SIM clock *#746025625# [*#sim0clock#]
to check if the Sim-Clock can be Stopped. This option is depen on your service provider network. (Sim-clock-stop is a kind of standby mode which will save battery time)

update:
This code doesn t work on phone with software version 4.59.
---------------------------------------------------------

Waranty Code *#92702689# [*#war0anty#]
Menu:
Displays Serial Number.
Displays the Month and Year of Manufacture (0698)
Displays (if there) the date where the phone was purchased (MMYY) you can here set the Purchasing Date
(Warning: You can only do this once - so be careful what you write)
Displays the date of the last repairment - if found (0000)
The next screen has Transfer User Data? (the same option as the 8110)
To exit turn the phone off and then back on.
---------------------------------------------------------

SP Lock The Service provider (SP) lock
Is used to lock the cell phone to the SP s SIM card. Once the cell phone is locked to a specific operator, if one inserts a SIM card from a different operator the phone will refuse to accept it!
The cell phone will however accept another SIM card from the same operator.

All Nokia phones (2110 and newer) have four different SIM locks which can be used to lock the phone for up to 4 different providers. But most phones with restriction only have one lock activated. ( lock 1)
The main code used in Nokia phones is:

#pw+(master code)+Y#

This code is able to check, activate or remove Sim card restriction (SP-lock).
Use the * key to get the p, + and w chars.
Y has to be 1,2,3 or 4 - depending of what lock you what to deal with.

#pw+1234567890+1# for Provider-Lock status
#pw+1234567890+2# for Network-Lock status
#pw+1234567890+3# for Provider(???)-Lock status
#pw+1234567890+4# for SimCard-Lock status

(master code) is a 10 digit code, based on the phones IMEI number.
(I can NOT give you the master code SO DON T ASK ME FOR IT! )

Please click here to learn more about how to obtain mastercode and find out the lock status of your phone
eq. To remove restriction on lock 1 type following code:

#pw+(master code)+1#

If you just want to check your phone use 10 random numbers Eg. 1234567890 as the (master code)
eq. To check if phone if restricted on lock 1 type the following code:

#pw+1234567890+1#

Please NOTE that these codes could be used with care!
A user told me that it s only possible to type in about 3 different codes on each lock! Then something bad will happen ..therefore be careful!
---------------------------------------------------------

How can I check what locks have my phone closed?

There is 2 methods:
Use winlock to see the state of the locks, pressing Read Info. The Counter is the number of times that you have tried unlock your phone using an incorrect master code.
You can check it entering an imaginary mastercode on your phone but, it s not recommended because if you try enter a code 5 times your phone will not work anymore. By example, if you press at your phone #pw+1234567890+2# (note that # , p , w and + characters must be selected from * key) and your phone give you Code Error then your phone have lock 2 closed, if you get the message SIM Restriction Off your phone have lock 2 opened.
Look the table above to see how can check all locks:

Lock number Description Sequence to Check
1 Provider Lock #pw+1234567890+1#
2 Network-Lock #pw+1234567890+2#
3 Another Provider Lock #pw+1234567890+3#
4 SIM Card Lock #pw+1234567890+4#
---------------------------------------------------------
Unlock SP-Lock
Here is a way to Unlock your phone which is Service Provider locked, without to know SPLock code. With a Nokia 16xx/21xx/31xx/51xx/81xx that are SIMlocked to one privider you can bypass the SP lock like this:

First of all, PIN CODE MUST BE ON, then press:

C

C and hold until it clears display
* and hold until start to blink
* and hold until start to blink
04***your pin>#

Each time you turn your phone OFF it resets the lock, so this need to be done each time you ll turn your phone ON

The phone now says: PIN CODE CHANGED (or ACCEPTED)
and the SIM card is accepted until you restart the phone again.

NOTE: On vesion 5.04 Nokia has removed this option !

update:
There s another Nokia service provider lock generator for DOS (somehere on the net) called 5161un.zip (for Nokia 51xx-61xx models) This program uses the #pw+(master code)+1# code to unlock the phone. With this software you need to have a access to the eeprom.. Sad
---------------------------------------------------------

Bypass the SP-lock

With a Nokia 16xx/21xx/31xx/51xx/81xx that are SIM locked to one privider you can bypass the SP lock like this:

Insert sim card of diferent provider.

Turn on the phone and press the UP VOLUME key for 3 sec. then release it and the phone says PIN CODE ?

Press the "C" key.

Then Press * and wait until it desapear and apear again, then press * one more time and 04*PIN*PIN*PIN#

The phone now says: PIN CODE CHANGED (or ACCEPTED)
and the SIM card is accepted until you restart the phone again.

update:
On version 5.04 Nokia has removed this option !
---------------------------------------------------------

How to open lock 1 and 4?
You will need Winlock software and MBUS cable to do this. Winlock is a Nokia service program that you can use to open lock 1 and 4, really you are closing locks when you do that, but when you write ????? at MCC+MNC and MSIN text box, the phone don t understand it and consider that it s open.

That trick only works for lock 1 and 4, but not for lock 2 and 3. If you did not know your lock type, please read our miscellaneous tips page first. or read at above section in this page.

Install winlock 1.10
Connect your MBUS nokia data cable
Run Winlock
Push Read Phone, if you have Lock 2 or Lock 3 closed you can not open your phone, but you can try change Lock 2.
Select State Close in Lock 1 and Lock 4, fill out MCC+MNC and MSIN text boxes with ??????? and Push Close Locks.
Now you can use any operator card in your phone. If you get any error when you do that do the following steps:
Select State Automatic in Lock 1 and Lock 4 and change type to User in Lock 1 and Lock 4, fill out MCC+MNC and MSIN text boxes with ?????????? and Push Close Locks.
Select State Automatic in Lock 1 and Lock 4 and change type to Factory in Lock 1 and Lock 4, fill out MCC+MNC and MSIN text boxes with ?????????? and Push Close Locks.
If you continue getting errors you must turn off your phone and reset computer and try again.
---------------------------------------------------------

How to open lock 2?

When operators companies close lock2 you can only use the contract or prepaid card for this operator, but you can use another operator company prepaid card if you know what GID1 must write.

Install Winlock
Run Winlock
Configure Winlock. Select menu Winlock->Defaults and change GID byte count to 2.
Push Read Phone, and write down GID1 info that appear in lock 2.
Insert the prepaid card from a different operator company.
We must find out a the GID1 info adecuate for our new prepaid or contract card, take a look at our GID1 list and check if your operator and SIM card type is included, if not try to get a phone that have lock 2 closed and have the SIM card type that you want to use in your phone, and read GID1 info with winlock. You can try to write the most used GID1 codes like 0000,10FF,01FF, or FFFF, etc.
Change Lock 2 Type from User To Factory or from Factory to User.
Push Close Locks
Your phone will be reset every time you push Close Locks, if your card is not acepted the GID1 is not correct, repeat from step 4 until you find the correct GID1.
If you get error you must turn off your phone and reset computer and try again.
If you want your phone accept your original prepaid card write in GID1 the code you read at step 2 and close locks.
Exist a GID1 list?

In addition to the official way to open locks that Nokia service centers use with TDB4 or TDF-4(for WinTesla) security boxes, there is two secrets methods:

Opening the phone and adding a chip inside phone motherboard. But you will loose any warranty of your phone.
Using a special software with a MBUS Nokia cable. I don t have this software. Please don t bother me asking me about that. The only thing i know about that is that a friend is removing lock 2 using a special software. He don t make this for money, only for fun.
--------------------------------------------------------

Main Code #pw+(master code)+Y#
This code is able to check, activate or remove Sim card restriction (SP-lock).

Use the * key to get the p, + and w chars.
Y has to be 1,2,3 or 4 - depending of what lock you what to deal with.

#pw+1234567890+1# for Provider-Lock status
#pw+1234567890+2# for Network-Lock status
#pw+1234567890+3# for Provider(???)-Lock status
#pw+1234567890+4# for SimCard-Lock status

(master code) is a 10 digit code, based on the phones IMEI number.

update:
I get report that told me the code didn t works for Optimus Card
---------------------------------------------------------
Enhanced Full Rate Codec (EFR)
Enhanced Full Rate will give you much better sound quality when you enable it. The new Enhanced Full Rate CODEC adopted by GSM uses the ASELP (AlgebraicCode Excitation Linear Prediction) compression technology. This technology allows for much great voice quality in the same number of bits as the older Full Rate CODEC. The older technology was called LPC-RPE (Linear Prediction Coding with Regular Pulse Excitation). Both operate at 13 kilobits.(but you take up more space on the network, so they can charge you more)

Nokia Speed Trap Detector Urban Legend spread by Nokia Engineers ;^)
The settings for radar speed traps detector. Your Nokia cell phone can be programmed to pick up radar speed traps, when programmed your cell phone picks up the radar and alerts you on the message alert tone. ( Doesn't work with Nokia 7110! )
1. Enter your menu
2. Select settings
3. Select security settings
4. Select closed user group
5. Select on
6. Enter 00000
7. Press ok
8. Clear back to normal, within a few seconds your phone will display a radar sign with five zero's next to it. It is now activated.
Unfortunately only Nokia phones have this function. The Cell Phone info display needs to be de-activated. Settings -> Phone Settings -> Cell Info display. Each time you turn off your phone, or even each time you loose contact with your carrier, you'll have to activate it again... It is done using steps 1 through 5 above, but the number (00000) will be already on the field as a default.

The James Bond Trick

If you short-circuit the left middle and right pins on the bottom of the phone with all connections touching each other, the Nokia software hangs! The profile "Headset" will be activated. Before you do this just activate the "Automatic Answer" in the headset profile and set the ringing volume to "Mute". Now you can use your phone for checking out what people are talking about in a room. Just place it under a table in a room and call it. The phone receives the call without ringing and you can listen to what people are saying! Network Monitor
There is a hidden menu inside your Nokia phone. If you want to activate it, you'll have to re-program some chips inside of your phone.
Check your software version. You can only continue if you have v4.33, v4.73 or v5.24.
Take apart the phone.
De-solder the EEPROM (ATMEL AT 24C64)
Read out the data with an EEPROM programmer and save it to a file (Backup)
If you have v.33 or v4.73, change the address "03B8" from "00" to "FF"
If you have v5.24 then change the address "0378" from "00" to "FF"
Write the new data to the EEPROM and solder it back to the phone
Power on your phone and you should have "Netmonitor" enabled.
The Network Monitor gives you the following information:
Carrier number, MS RX Level in DBM, Received signal quality, MS TX power level, C1 (Path loss criterion, used for cell selection and reselection). The range is -99 to 99, RTL (Radio link timeout), Timeslot, Indication of the transmitter status, Information on the Network parameters, TMSI (Temporary Mobile Subscriber Identity), Cell identification (Cell ID, Number of cells being used), MCC (Mobile country code), MCN (Mobile network code), LAC (Location area code), Ciphering (On/Off), Hopping (On/Off), DTX (On/Off), Discard cell barred information.

Cell Broadcast
While Short Message Service (SMS) can be configured as a personal service, Cell Broadcast is a general service which is designed for subscribers of a specific cell or topic. For example, a subscriber to cell 050 in England will receive information on the GSM tower currently being used by their phone. This new concept brings a whole new meaning to the term mobile communications as the phone is now able to receive information such as share prices or weather updates without the need of data cards and computers. At present the following message types exist (note: this may vary from carrier to carrier and some carriers may charge for this service):

Code Title
000 Index
010 Flashes
020 Hospitals
022 Doctors
024 Pharmacy
030 Long Distant Road Reports
032 Local Road Reports
034 Taxis

052 Network Information
054 Operator Services
056 Directory Inquiries (national)
057 Directory Inquiries (international)
058 Customer Care (national)
059 Customer Care (international)

In the future one will be able to control each individual call by use of the following service codes. To do this the user has to insert the service code in front of the last # in the MMI command above.

Enhanced Full Rate will give you much better sound quality when you enable it. The new Enhanced Full Rate CODEC adopted by GSM uses the ASELP (Algebraic Code Excitation Linear Prediction) compression technology. This technology allows for much great voice quality in the same number of bits as the older Full Rate CODEC. The older technology was called LPC-RPE (Linear Prediction Coding with Regular Pulse Excitation). Both operate at 13 kilobits.(but you take up more space on the network, so they can charge you more) - Talk-time is reduced by about 5% when using the ERF option.

Mobile The secrets of *#xxxx# numbers, IN ALL PHONES

No Autostart - When switching the phone on up to the pin inquiry press the whole time the "ABC" key (pen) - this is to ignore the autoinitialization programs (and the MMC programs) - "safeboot".

*#06# Serial Number/IMEI indicates
*#0000# SW version (e.g. V3.42.1, 16-10-03, NHL-10)
*#2820# Bluetooth (BT) device address
xx# Directory quick access (xx = storage location and afterwards lozenge e.g. 24 #)
12345 ... is according to be the standard Nokia nokia-securitycode.
Caution - starting from here the codes are "dangerous"
*#7370925538#
*#Res0Wallet#... is to delete the code around the "wallet"

*#7780# - Reset to original settings
*#7370# - Soft format - resets all the telefone Memory (like Formatting a diskNOTE! Battery should be full up to at least 75%, do not accomplish during the procedure under any circumstances !
The procedure takes some minutes (approx. 3-4) Green, * 3 - Hard format: If the Mobile (only telephone memory) formats, puts back the attitudes (see * to # 7780 #) and implements a RESET.

NOTE! Battery should be full up to at least 75%, do not accomplish during the procedure under any circumstances !
The procedure takes some minutes (approx. 3-4)Proceeding: Equipment switch off, keep "green key" (take off) at the same time pressed, "*" and to "3" key and switch the equipment on (the keys thereby keep further pressed)... to "Formatting" on the display appears...

Tip 2 : Shit happens, on a smartphone, its inevitable u do something wrong, and this calls for a format of fone. to format the fone, press *#7370#, then enter the lock code, which is the sec code of the fone.
NOTE: batt must b full, else if format is disrupted by low batt, consequences will b disatrousI heard the code *#7780# works too, pretty much the same i tink.for 6600 users, to format the fone, theres an alternative way.
Press and hold <3>, <*>, and the buttons, then power on fone, keep holding on the 3 buttons, till u come to a format screen. tis method ONLY works on 6600, and need not enter the sec code. BUT sec code wun be reset to default 12345

Tip 7: Operator logosUse a filemanager like FExplorer or SeleQ to add the folders: "c:/system/Apps/phone/oplogo". Add a .bmp picture to folder "oplogo" and restart your phone! The .bmp picture size needs to be: 97 x 25 pixels
Tip 9: While you are viewing a picture in your phone's gallery, press one of these shortcut keys (definitely works on 6600, not sure about other symbians)1 - turn image anticlockwise3 - turn image clockwise* - toggle on/off of full screen5 - zoom in0 - zoom outA soft and Hard resetA

Soft-reset - the process of resetting all the settings of the phone to the factory default! No applications are deleted! A Hard-reset is like formatting a drive! It does format the memory. Everything that has been installed after the first use of the phone is deleted! It will recover the memory of the phone to the state you purchased it!
It is done by inputing the following code: *#7370# NOTE: The battery must be full or the charger has to be connected to the phone so that it does not run out of power and make the phone unusableStart up in Safe Mode so no 'auto start' apps will be running:To make sure that no memory-resident programs start when you reboot your phone, hold down the pencil key when you turn on the phone and hold it on untill you have to enter your PIN code.(When you have trouble booting up the phone with the MMC in it because it got corrupted for some reason, this trick willalmost always let you boot up the phone so you can remove the latest installed app which might have caused theproblem or if your phone is "unrepairable" you can still back up your important data before you do a format.)
[/>">>>>>>>>>>>>>>It may happens that a program corrupts the C: drive of your phone. In such case, some data can be lost of course but, more annoying, some applications may not work or work only partially,...Series 60On a Series 60 v1 based phone (N-Gage, 3650, 7650), two key sequences will allow to restore your phone to a cleaner state:

Normal Reset (*#7780#) : Restores ini files from rom but preserves user data (photos, 3rd party apps etc)Deep Reset (*#7370#) :
This reformats completely the C: drive. All applications and files stored on this drive will be lost and clean default files will be rewritten. In both case, the phone will ask you a confirmation and you will have to enter a security code (12345 by default).Files and applications stored on E: drive are not be affected by these sequences. On newer Series 60 phones (6600/6620/7610), the sequence is slightly different:power the phone off, press and keep down the keeys green/talk + ’3’ + ’*’, - power on the phone.release the keys when the formatting starts.>">>>>>>>>>>>>>*3370#

BOOT PROCESS-XP, 2000, 2003

First is the POST, this stands for Power on Self Test, for the computer. This process tests memory as well as a number of other subsystems. You can usually monitor this as it runs each test. After that is complete the system will run POST for any device that has BIOS (Basic Input-Output System). An AGP has its own BIOS, as do some network cards and various other devices.Once the POST is complete and the BIOS is sure that everything is working properly, the BIOS will then attempt to read the MBR (Master Boot Record). This is the first sector of the first hard drive (called the Master or HD0). When the MBR takes over it means that Windows is now in control. The MBR looks at the BOOT SECTOR (the first sector of the active partition). That is where NTLDR is located; NTLDR is the BOOT LOADER for Windows XP. NTLDR will allow memory addressing, initiate the file system, read the boot.ini and load the boot menu. NTLDR has to be in the root of the active partition as do NTDETECT.COM, BOOT.INI, BOOTSECT.DOS (for multi-OS booting) and NTBOOTDD.SYS (if you have SCSI adapters)Once XP is selected from the Boot Menu, NTLDR will run NTDETECT.COM, BOOT.INI and BOOTSECT.DOS to get the proper OS selected and loaded. The system starts in 16-bit real mode and then moves into 32-bit protected mode.NTLDR will then load NTOSKRNL.EXE and HAL.DLL. Effectively, these two files are windows XP. They must be located in %SystemRoot%System32.NTLDR reads the registry, chooses a hardware profile and authorizes device drivers, in that exact order. At this point NTOSKRNL.EXE takes over. It starts WINLOGON.EXE that in turn starts LSASS.EXE; this is the program that displays the Logon screen so that you can logon.Sample Boot.ini File
This is a sample of a default Boot.ini file from a Windows XP Professional computer.

How do I Backup Active Directory?

Backing up Active Directory is essential to maintain an Active Directory database. You can back up Active Directory by using the Graphical User Interface (GUI) and command-line tools that the Windows Server 2003 family provides. You frequently backup the system state data on domain controllers so that you can restore the most current data. By establishing a regular backup schedule, you have a better chance of recovering data when necessary. To ensure a good backup includes at least the system state data and contents of the system disk, you must be aware of the tombstone lifetime. By default, the tombstone is 60 days. Any backup older than 60 days is not a good backup. Plan to backup at least two domain controllers in each domain, one of at least one backup to enable an authoritative restore of the data when necessary.

System State Data
Several features in the windows server 2003 family make it easy to backup Active Directory. You can backup Active Directory while the server is online and other network function can continue to function.
System state data on a domain controller includes the following components:•
Active Directory system state data does not contain Active Directory unless the server, on which you are backing up the system state data, is a domain controller. Active Directory is present only on domain controllers. •
The SYSVOL shared folder:
This shared folder contains Group policy templates and logon scripts. The SYSVOL shared folder is present only on domain controllers. •
The Registry: This database repository contains information about the computer's configuration. • System startup files: Windows Server 2003 requires these files during its initial startup phase. They include the boot and system files that are under windows file protection and used by windows to load, configure, and run the operating system. •

The COM+ Class Registration database: The Class registration is a database of information about Component Services applications. •

The Certificate Services database: This database contains certificates that a server running Windows server 2003 uses to authenticate users. The Certificate Services database is present only if the server is operating as a certificate server. System state data contains most elements of a system's configuration, but it may not include all of the information that you require recovering data from a system failure. Therefore, be sure to backup all boot and system volumes, including the System State, when you back up your server.

RAID types

RAID-0: RAID-0 is called disk "striping". All the data is spread out in chunks across all the disks in the RAID set. RAID-0 has great performance, because you spread out the load of storing data onto more physical drives. There is no parity generated for RAID-0. Therefore there is no overhead to write data to RAID-0 disks. RAID-0 is only good for better performance, and not for high availability, since parity is not generated for RAID-0 disks. RAID-0 requires at least two physical disks.
RAID-1: RAID-1 is called disk mirroring. All the data is written to at least two separate physical disks. The disks are essentially mirror images of each other. If one of the disks fails, the other can be used to retrieve data. Disk mirroring is good for very fast read operations. It's slower when writing to the disks, since the data needs to be written twice. RAID-1 requires at least two physical disks.

RAID-5: RAID-5 uses disk striping with parity. The data is striped across all the disks in the RAID set, along with the parity information needed to reconstruct the data in case of disk failure. RAID-5 is the most common method used, since it achieves a good balance between performance and availability. RAID-5 requires at least three physical disks.

DHCP LEASE PROCESS

1. Discover: The host will initially send a broadcast in an attempt to discover a DHCP server on the network.
2. Offer: The DHCP server will 'see' the workstation looking for the DHCP service and respond with an 'offer', which is an IP address.
3. Request: The client will receive the 'offer' and, in most cases, will accept it. This means it sends an 'official request' for the same IP address offered previously by the server.
4. Accept: The DHCP server will complete the transaction by sending an 'accept' message and marking the particular IP address for the specific host.

DHCP SERVER- Dynamic host configuration protocol is used to automatically assign TCP/IP addresses to clients along with the correct subnet mask, default gateway, and DNS server.
169.254.0.0 -169.254.255.255-APIPA Address

BOOTP- short for Bootstrap Protocol is a UDP network protocol used by a network client to obtain its IP address automatically. This is usually done during the bootstrap process when a computer is starting up. The BOOTP servers assign the IP address from a pool of addresses to each client.

BOOTP/DHCP differencesThere are significant differences in the way in which BOOTP and DHCP perform host configuration. The following table compares and contrasts the features of the two protocols that vary.

BOOTP DHCP Designed prior to DHCP. Designed after BOOTP.Intended to configure diskless workstations with limited boot capabilities. Intended to configure frequently relocated networked computers (such as portables) that have local hard drives and full boot capabilities.Dynamic BOOTP has default 30-day expiration on IP address leases. DHCP has default eight-day expiration on IP address leases.Supports a limited number of client configuration parameters called vendor extensions. Supports a larger and extensible set of client configuration parameters called options.Describes a two-phase bootstrap configuration process, as follows:• Clients contact BOOTP servers to perform address determination and boot file name selection.• Clients contact Trivial File Transfer Protocol (TFTP) servers to perform file transfer of their boot image. Describes a single-phase boot configuration process whereby a DHCP client negotiates with a DHCP server to determine its IP address and obtain any other initial configuration details it needs for network operation.BOOTP clients do not rebind or renew configuration with the BOOTP server except when the system restarts. DHCP clients do not require a system restart to rebind or renew configuration with the DHCP server. Instead, clients automatically enter a rebinding state at set timed intervals to renew their leased address allocation with the DHCP server. This process occurs in the background and is transparent to the user.

ARP (Address Resolution Protocol)Address Resolution Protocol (ARP) is a protocol for mapping an Internet Protocol address (IP address) to a physical machine address.

RARP (Reverse Address Resolution Protocol)Address Resolution Protocol (ARP) is a protocol for mapping a physical machine address to Internet Protocol address (IP address).

DHCP Relay AgentThe DHCP Relay Agent component is a Bootstrap Protocol (BOOTP) relay agent that relays Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) messages between DHCP clients and DHCP servers on different IP networks. The DHCP Relay Agent is compliant with RFC 1542. You cannot use the DHCP Relay Agent component on a computer running the DHCP service. BOOTP is a host configuration protocol developed before DHCP that was designed to configure diskless workstations with limited boot capabilities
